Data Lake was started by two medical doctors and entrepreneurs - Ligia Kornowska and Wojciech Sierocki (more under Team), both Forbes 30 under 30. The idea was born out of a need for good quality, ethically-sourced data of proven provenance they observed in the healthcare industry. Together, they created the initial concept of sovereign medical data donation system, where patients could contribute to research by authorising a chosen third party to access their health data on their behalf.

Data Lake was officially born in early 2020 and obtained European Union funding. The company first product was a consent management system for the Donate Your Data Foundation, co-created at that time by more than 30 different industry organizations. Along with the Donate Your Data Foundation, Data Lake took part as the technology provider in the first major data donation project aiming at researching patient’s pathways in breast cancer, recognized by the Polish National Medical Research Agency and founded by a pharmaceutical sponsor. In that project, our team contracted 5 public and private institutions, collected over 30 thousand consents and delivered hundreds of longitudinal, complete datasets for analysis.

The first project came with some major learnings for Date Lake. We concluded that the most effective channel of patients’ recruitment was in fact through cooperation with qualified healthcare providers, equipped with adequate tools. Therefore, we started developing our technology to serve the needs of researchers and healthcare providers on top of functionalities for patients.

We decided to launch the Data Lake Application, and improved our platform to collect consents for medical data and to make it available for and customizable by thousands of researchers, start-ups and pharma companies worldwide. We also made so that this new platform integrates our token $LAKE.

Our native token $LAKE we launched on Ethereum on December 7th 2022 for incentivizing patients and providers, as well as ensuring access to our patient recruitment platform. More info on the token in the LAKE Token section.
